Firefox Keywords Are Great!

by Scott on October 28, 2008

Here’s a quick tip on why Firefox is such a great browser.  Keywords!  Whenever you add a favorite to your Bookmarks you can then add a keyword to make it super easy to re-visit.  Here’s an example of one I have to visit Lifehacker.com:

Now all I have to do in order to visit Lifehacker is type lh into the address bar and press enter, Firefox does the rest.

To add a keyword for a bookmark simply right click it and select Properties from the popup menu.  You can then enter a keyword like the example above.

Agreed, this is a great feature (although it’s been around a long time!). It’s so quick to hit Command+L or Control+L to go directly to the address bar, then type your keyword and hit enter. Who needs a mouse?

Larry,
I agree Ctrl-L and then keywords are great. I also have the Google Toolbar installed and pressing Alt-G goes directly to the search box. Ctrl-K will place the mouse cursor in the Firefox search.

I use keywords for all different kind of things - in combination with urllink addon even more where I use it to look up a selected word in online dictionary for instance (or wikipedia). This because you can use %s in the url which is replaced with what you entered in the address line or (with urllink) what was the selected text, for example: http://dict.leo.org/ende?search=%s

You can use these HTML tags and attributes: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>
